Okay, I know you guys are out there reading. Yeah, I check the stats.
I'm sure it's fun to read when I'm talking about boobs and cabbage and whatnot. But now I need some suggestions, so pay attention.
I need to know what you think is the best way to affect change in the world, one person at a time. Education? Food? Health care? I'm not really interested in donating to a general cause - I want somewhere that says "If you donate X dollars, you pay for one year of school fees for a child in Africa." Or "If you donate Y, you innoculate 20 children against Malaria." Something concrete.
I admit a bias against American programs; in general, I think there are so many ways for a person here to get help if they want it: after-school programs, Head Start, lunch programs, church programs, scholarships, etc. A kid in Afghanistan really has no options. I also admit a bias towards programs that help out women and girls.
If you had to pick one cause, one program, what would it be?
I would pick Heifer International. Instead of helping one person, it helps families and villages. www.heifer.org - although I know you know about it already.

ReplyDeleteI always thought the donate-a-dairy-cow programs were really cool, sustainable charaties. Fits your international criteria, but not exclusively aimed at women and children.

Hey Leah, I don't know if you know that I read here...but i just love your blog (this is belllosin from dottie's ~lou~). I second the Heifer International suggestion. My family and I have been exchanging shares of goats, hens, cows and other things for christmas presents for years now. It leaves us all feeling so warm and fuzzy!

I don't know, I LIKE hearing baout your boobs. ;) All kidding aside, try Catholic Childrens Charities. My parents did this while I was growing up. They were able to "adopt" a child in Africa the same age as me. They donated x amount per month, the child got clothes, food, and schooling, plus she sent a letter to us every month. It was neat for me to see as I was growing up.
